It’s Spring! Sort of.

We picked these for you, can you believe?

So! You’ve probably heard, it’s Spring ™ Let’s talk about Spring.

I’ll keep it short.

To me, Spring is an incredible set of months which demand everything for every thing. Among all that flurry, I’m reminded that the process of growing is simply insane. The soil is exceedingly alive and yet, full of the fuel of death. The seedlings are nothing like their final forms and will shed themselves ten times over before the season end. The cold mornings dissolve with the heat of midday, and boil down with our brains by Quittin’ Time. Out in the field or the hoop houses, each carefully prepared plan is subject to myriad challenges working in tandem with small triumphs and slow (yet such sudden) progress.

Our first CSA pack after a busy Spring of planting and harvesting.

All of this while a group of people gets to know each other from scratch,  balancing new and unencountered energies with longstanding local bonds. This, to me, is where the unrepentant renewal of Spring is most prevalent. Everyone is here by some string of decisions that leads to land and its churn. Be it by proximity, desire, indecision, passion, etc. each one has to now encounter the whole. Some are here for life and some for a season. I’m told this year is a cohesive group, and subsequently we’ve started to foster friendships inside and outside of the farm. It’s wonderful. It’s even intergenerational. While my ~34 long years~ tops the age list some are just stepping fully into The World, and everywhere in between. In this way, I am deeply grateful for them. It has been an unforgiving decade to maneuver and live well in. But I enjoy these people and they are good. They prove one can still kick the shovel into their frozen ground to let warmer air in.

And in this same way, I am pained to be in such great company knowing the season will shift and so will we. While certainly no loss, each of us will continue through, unrecognizable as we shed ourselves ten times over. Some will move or leave or stay, turning as this place turns around them. At first this brings me sadness, but I remember this is how we must attend to the world. Each investment must be made for its own sake, knowing it will change shape and in turn, change us.
