THE FARM

Mission

Wonka’s Harvest is a collective that harnesses and honors the power of our water, air, and soil to nurture the grounds for all of our living communities. With a cultivated spirit of learning, restoring, and changing with our physical environment, Wonka’s Harvest aims to foster reimagined food networks that ensure everyone has the right to safe, nutritious, and culturally appropriate foods.

Land Acknowledgement:

Wonka’s Harvest is located in Hollandale, Wisconsin. It is our utmost priority to extend the honor and histories of the land that we now reside on. As landowners of stolen land, it is our responsibility to acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the Kiikaapoi, Sauk and Meskwaki, Ho-chunk, Miami, and Očeti Šakówin people. We observe and respect the people who have inhabited this land and their descendants who are still residing and stewarding the land of this region.

NO-TILL PRODUCTION.

Wonka’s Harvest is a no-till vegetable farm, one of the few farms of its kind in the greater midwest. By committing to a no-till operation, we are significantly reducing our ecological impacts on the soil health, our water quality, and our contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. No-till means more physical labor, but it is a commitment that our farm prides itself in to minimize soil disruption and our dependency on fossil-fuel powered machinery.

This choice better prepares us for climactic changes and helps our neighbors downstream by improving water retention and soil erosion while reducing our need for soil amendments and fertilizers.

FOOD ACCESSIBILITY.

An integral part of our commitment to sustainability is the accessibility of our produce and fostering a community response to food insecurity. With the use of our pay-what-you-can CSA, we are offering the opportunity for our community and CSA members to participate in food justice and food relief work.

Our members and customers are directly fueling the movement of a hyper local food system that doesn’t just benefit them directly, but the wellbeing of their neighbors and growing communities.

Though we are not certified organic, Wonka’s Harvest has committed to maintaining an organic practice. We do not use any herbicides or pesticides. Our seed stock is certified organic, and our soil amendments, compost, packaging, sanitation solutions all adhere to the organic certification requirements.

We emphasize the importance of balanced systems, which includes insects and pests. When we face pest pressure, we rely on using beneficial predators, or “good” bugs. We often use parasitizing insects and nematodes that are native to the region to predate on insects that commonly predate on vegetables.

ORGANIC PRACTICE.

As first generation farmHers, it is incredibly important to us that we are spotlighting people, bodies, and experiences that are not traditionally associated with agricultural work. We want to share our space, experience, and the things that we have learned along the way with not only our fellow farmers, but with folks that are interested in learning about food production, local food systems, and or farm system management.

We participate in this work by attending conferences and workshops, partnering with community organizations and restaurants, hosting volunteers, teaching classes, guest speaking at schools, mentoring other farmers, engaging in research and seed trialing, and interacting with our customers and members.

We are always looking for new ways to grow, support, and collaborate with our network of people and organizations dedicated to resource sharing and accessibility.
